A Desire To Eliminate A Small, under utilized screened porch was the beginning of an extensive 5-month kitchen remodeling project in a designer's own home. Denise Quade, a designer with Domicile, Inc. located in Madison, WI, has designed and managed kitchen projects for clients for over 24 years. Finding the time to juggle her own home with her other client's projects was a real challenge.
Nestled in the woods along the Rock River in Wisconsin, this 10-year-old home had a kitchen that was already out-dated and cramped for space. With three teenagers, this active family needed a floor plan that would accommodate a variety of different activities.
The family wanted a raised bar area suitable for
entertaining. A design that connected the kitchen with the dining and living rooms in an open, spacious floor plan was preferred. In addition, a chopping block located in an island and a desire for the microwave to be less obvious was a high priority.
Removing some interior walls and replacing them with decorative pillars and flowing soffit exposed the new kitchen space to the other areas of the home. Designing two islands in the kitchen with varying heights added interest and helped with traffic patterns.
Cherry cabinets, red birch flooring, painted trim and the use of different countertop materials make this kitchen attractive from any viewpoint. Details such as low voltage rope lighting, a secondary sink and a built-in bulletin board helped create a space that is not only functional, but also a joy to work in.
